We are delighted to be expanding the work of The Pendsey Trust into Africa with our new partnership with the Tanzania Diabetes Association. Based at the Muhimbili National Hospital Diabetes Centre in Dar es Salaam, the organisation aims to improve the lives of those with Type 1 diabetes from disadvantaged background from across Tanzania. The life expectancy for a child with Type 1 diabetes in Africa can be as low as one year and the issues such individuals face include the cost of insulin, limited availability of monitoring equipment and lack of storage facilities to keep insulin cool.
With the assistance of The Pendsey Trust, the Tanzania Diabetes Association is hoping to initiate a new vocational programme which will help such patients break free of the cycle of poverty and afford the insulin they need to survive through entering employment. You can read about some of the first participants in the programme here.
